Graduate student assistantships (GATs & GARs)

GATs

Gats are awarded to assist faculty in their teaching workload. They are awarded according to faculty need and students' experience in nursing and teaching. The number of GATs available is dependent on faculty workload and adequate funding. GATs must hold active CARNA registration.

A GAT is paid as 50% scholarship and 50% salary.

Click here for information about GATs at the University of Calgary.

To apply for a GAT, please complete the application form and submit to nursgrad@ucalgary.ca using the subject header "GAT_StudentLastName"

When can I apply for Graduate Student Assistantships (GATs)?

You can submit an application for a GAT in the term prior to the term in which you would like to be.

Graduate Students' Association

Can I opt out of health and dental benefits?

Full-time students who are already covered by their own health and dental plan can opt out of the graduate students’ plan by completing the Insurance Plan Opt-Out (Waiver) form.

How can I obtain funding to attend a conference?

Funding is available through the Graduate Students’ Association.
and through the University Research Grants Council.

Leaves and withdrawals

I am experiencing medical or personal problems that are interfering with the progress of my studies. Can I take a leave of absence?

You may apply for a leave of absence up to one year. A leave will “stop the clock” in your program. Information and the application is available here.

I am experiencing medical or personal problems that are interfering with the progress of my studies and I cannot foresee it being resolved for some time.

If the problems cannot be resolved within a year, it is best to withdraw from the program. A withdrawal form must be completed. You can apply for re-admission at a later date.

Progress reports

Do I need to complete a Progress Report every year?

Completion of a Progress Report is required every year. Course-based students are sent a report from the Graduate Program Office as an attachment. Continuing MN thesis and doctoral students are sent an electronic Progress Report from the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Scholarships

What is the difference between the Open Scholarship Competition and the Program Recommended Competition?

The Open Scholarship Competition allows departments to nominate students into a campus wide competition. The Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship Committee determines the recipients and the award. This competition is restricted to thesis applicants only. The application deadline is February 1 and the application information and link is on the Nursing Website.

The Program Recommended Competition includes awards that are specific to Nursing and are determined by the Faculty of Nursing and approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The application deadline is February 1. The Program Recommended awards are open to thesis and course-based applicants, depending on the terms of reference for each award.

You may apply to both competitions at the same time. Link to Funding page

How do I apply for a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, a SSHRC Master’s Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) or a CIHR Master’s award?

A call is sent out in fall semester from the Faculty of Graduate Studies inviting applications. The application deadline for the SSHRC Master’s CGS and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship is normally the middle of October. The application deadline for the Master’s CIHR award is normally the beginning of December. However, students should begin discussing application with their supervisors when they are completing the Progress Report in spring/summer. These three types of awards are vetted through the Graduate Program Office. Information on these awards can be found on their websites at SSHRC and CIHR.

Please check these sites for other information on funding.

Western Deans' Agreement

Can I take a course at another university and apply it to my graduate program?

All universities in Western Canada have an agreement whereby students may easily register into a course at a different Western Canadian university. This is done through the Western Dean’s Agreement. Interested students are to contact the Graduate Program Office. Students are to provide this office with the course syllabus to determine if it is acceptable and must have the approval of the supervisor.
