Admission eligibility

What are the admission requirements for the Faculty of Nursing graduate programs.

How is the grade point average (GPA) calculated for admission eligibility?

For the Master’s programs the GPA is calculated on the last two years of full-time study or the last 20 half course equivalents of the bachelor’s degree.
For the Doctoral and Post-Master’s programs the GPA is calculated as above on the bachelor’s degree and the entire Master’s degree.

What if I do not meet the 3.0 GPA admission requirement for the Master’s programs?

Normally applicants must complete additional coursework at the senior undergraduate level achieving a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. These courses are determined on an individual basis and applicants are requested to meet with the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs for advisement.

How can I find out if my degree is recognized at the U of C?

Can master’s courses from another university be transferred to the Faculty of Nursing Master’s programs?

Master’s courses may be transferable. The applicant must provide a full syllabus of the course which will be evaluated for equivalency at the U of C. A maximum of 3 half courses for the Master’s course-based and 2 half courses for the Master’s thesis are eligible.

Do I need active nursing registration in Alberta to take the Graduate Programs?

For the Master’s and Nurse Practitioner programs, CARNA registration is required. For the Doctoral Program, normally registration is required. 

How many years of clinical practice are required for your programs?

Doctoral Program: Not applicable
Master of Nursing: Not applicable
Integrated Master of Nursing/Nurse Practitioner and Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner diploma: Minimum of 3 years full-time equivalence or 4,500 hours in your chosen area of focus.

As an RN can I apply to the Master’s Program without completing a bachelor’s degree?

We do admit exceptional applicants directly into the Master’s Program without a bachelor’s degree. This is assessed on an individual basis. Please contact the Graduate Programs Office. Link

Can I take a graduate Nursing course if I am not registered in one of the graduate Nursing programs?

Certain courses can be completed through Open Studies. Applicants must meet the 3.0 grade point average admission requirement and the course prerequisites. Enrolment is dependent on space availability. A maximum of 2 half courses is allowed through Open Studies. Please contact the Graduate Programs Office. Link

Can I take a graduate course at the U of C if I am attending another university?

All universities in Western Canada have an agreement whereby students may easily register into a course at a different Western Canadian university. This is done through the Western Dean’s Agreement. Interested students are to contact the Graduate Program Office. Link
If students are from outside Western Canada, or the country, they may also take courses at the U of C as a Visiting Student. Please contact the Graduate Programs Office. Link

Application process

What are the deadlines for application?

February 1 for the following September; September 15 for the following January.

Can I still send my supporting documents after the application deadline?

We will accept late documents only within a short timeframe. You must notify the Graduate Programs Office of your intentions, otherwise your application will be closed.

What qualifies as an official transcript?

The transcript must be received by the Graduate Program Office in a sealed envelope from the originating institution with its logo on it. Applicants must not open the envelope or it will be deemed unofficial.

When will I find out if my application has been accepted?

Normally about 2 months after the application deadline. There are a number of variables that could delay admission decisions.

How will I know if I have been accepted?

All applicants will be notified by email of their admission or non-admission.

How do I obtain active nursing registration in Alberta?

Please refer to the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) for complete information. 

What is the process of admission for international applicants?

The process is the same for international applicants as it is for Canadian. Please note that international applicants normally cannot apply for a January admission because of Student Visa implications. Please contact the Graduate Programs Office. Link

If I am accepted into the program, but cannot begin on the admission date, do I have any options?

Admission can be deferred up to one year.

What are the cost of tuition and general fees?

How long will it take to complete the programs?

  • Master of Nursing course-based can be completed in 2 years as full-time student. Students have up to 6 years to complete the course-based program.
  • The Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner is a full-time program that takes 1.5 years to complete.
  • Master of Nursing thesis must be completed within 4 years.
  • Doctoral Program must be completed within 6 years.
  • Master of Nursing/Nurse Practitioner Program is 2.5 years of full-time study commencing in the Fall term only.

How many courses do I have to take to be considered full-time?

For the Master of Nursing course-based program, normally a minimum of 6 half courses over an academic year constitutes full-time. This includes the Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer term.

For the Master of Nursing thesis program or the Doctoral program, the U of C considers all thesis students full-time no matter how many courses they take.

What is the focus of the Nurse Practitioner Program?
