The Faculty of Nursing welcomes international students from around the world. In addition to meeting our faculty-specific admission requirements, international applicants must also meet the University of Calgary admission requirements as outlined on the International Students Website. Additionally, applicants must qualify for and obtain licensure with the College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta – CARNA.

CARNA (College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta) Requirements

Please note that CARNA has its own English Language Proficiency requirements which must be met. If applicants do not qualify for CARNA registration, we are unable to make an offer of admission to the Master of Nursing, combined Master of Nursing/Nurse Practitioner program, or Post-Master's Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to arrange for CARNA licensure in advance of applying to a graduate program in the Faculty of Nursing. Please be aware that this process can take many months and may also include a recommendation from CARNA that further upgrading of courses is required at the undergraduate level.

Before you apply to CARNA

  • If you are an Internationally Educated Nurse and you want to practice nursing in Alberta, you must first apply and pay an assessment fee directly with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) before you apply to CARNA. Once your documents are assessed by NNAS, they will then be forwarded to the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) for processing.
  • Visit www.nnas.ca or call a NNAS Customer Service Representative at 1.855.977.1898 for detailed information about the required sequence of steps.
