As part of their clinical practicum with Calgary Reads, a group of second year students are holding a book drive on Thursday Nov. 17.

Donations of new or gently used children’s books for ages zero to eight are preferred, but all books are welcome; monetary donations are also encouraged. Visit the nursing foyer between 8:30 and 4 to drop off your contribution.

For each book donated or every $1, you be entered in a draw to win a great prizes. One dollar is enough to buy a book for a child in need.

“Book ownership is one of the most important factors in enhancing literacy in children,” says Austin Bye, one of the eight students behind the event. “We are holding this drive on behalf of Calgary Reads to help improve literacy and quality of life of children in Calgary.”

With roots going back to 1998, Calgary Reads was initially conceived and launched as an early-literacy initiative. Today, the organization is a multifaceted reading movement, acting as a bridge between home and school, working to create communities where reading matters.
