In 1982, Dr. Wright established a unique, outpatient clinic (Family Nursing Unit) for the treatment and study of families suffering with serious illness and served as the Director for 20 years. She taught family nursing courses at both the undergraduate and graduate programs, and supervised the first special case doctoral student in the Faculty of Nursing. A scholarship in Family Nursing has been established in her name.

Dr. Wright, authored more than 60 articles and book chapters. She focused her clinical research on 1) illness beliefs; 2) family interventions; and 3) suffering and spirituality. She co-developed the Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models and the Illness Beliefs Model.

Dr. Wright co-authored 2 books: Nurses and families: A guide to family assessment and intervention (3rd ed.) (2000) and Beliefs: The heart of healing in families and illness (1996). She is also co-editor of 4 books: The cutting edge of family nursing (1990); Families and chronic illness (1987); Families and life-threatening illness (1987) and Families and psychosocial problems (1987). Dr. Wright has given over 300 presentations at national and international nursing, family health and family therapy conferences in Canada, Europe, the British Isles, Israel, Australia, Japan, and the United States.

She is a Clinical Member, Approved Supervisor, and Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Wright received a Significant Contribution to Marriage and Family Therapy Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
