Joy Calkin

Dr. Calkin was Professor and Dean of Nursing from 1985 to 1989. She was instrumental in initiating the CCNP negotiations. She served as a member of the Premier's Commission on Future Health Care for Albertans and was an author of The Rainbow Report (1990). From 1989-1990 she was appointed Associate Vice-President (Academic) and served as Vice-President (Academic) and Provost until 1997. In that position she initiated the University of Calgary long-term planning actions involving staff, students and faculty throughout the University. She was honored with the Frances Payne Bolton Schlotfeldt Lectureship in 1992 for her germinal work in advanced nursing practice. In 1997 she became President and Chief Executive Officer of Extendicare Inc., a multi-national long-term care company, serving with the company until 2002. Some of her professional activities subsequent to her University of Calgary service include: member of the Minister of Health Task Force on the Nursing Shortage (1998-99); of the Governor of Florida's Task Force on Accessibility & Affordability of Long-term Care (2000); of The American Assembly on Workforce: Achieving Worker Success & Business Prosperity - The New Role for Workforce Intermediaries, Columbia University (2003); of the Institute of Medicine committee that wrote Keeping Patients Safe: Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses (2004); member US National Commission on Nursing Workforce for Long-Term Care (2003 - ongoing). She was the senior health consultant to the Department of Labor, High-Growth Job Training Initiative in Health Care (2003). She is a board member of the Canadian Stroke Network for research and practice funding. Dr. Calkin serves on the board of the Philanthropic Foundations Canada as well as philanthropic foundations.
