Requests for Exchange/Visiting Student status are considered on a case-by-case basis. Due to high program enrolment and agency placement constraints, theory and practice course availability may be limited.
Exchange Student: a student enrolled in a Nursing program (usually international but could be national), who wishes to attend the University of Calgary Faculty of Nursing for one session or one full year at the fourth year level, as per a signed agreement with the student's home institution.
Visiting Student: a student enrolled in a Nursing program (usually Canadian, but could be international), who wishes to attend the University of Calgary Faculty of Nursing for one session or one full year, and who has a Letter of Permission from the home institution for specific theory and/or nursing practice courses at the University of Calgary.
Applicants must be in the final year of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program. Only students in good academic standing will be considered. Students must present a minimum 2.50 GPA (on the last 10 half course equivalents) and completion of equivalent prerequisites as confirmed by the home institution.
Only courses offered in Terms 7 and 8 of the BN Program will be considered for students seeking Exchange/Visiting Student Status (refer to the BN Program of Study for course listings). Students requesting enrolment in NURS 589 would also be required to enroll in two Senior Nursing Option courses which support the nursing practice course.
Students enrolling in a nursing practice course must agree to adhere to the contract conditions set out by the agency as well as policies specific to the Faculty of Nursing (some of which are the same). These include English Language Proficiency Requirement, Police Information Check, current CPR certification, updated immunizations, signed confidentiality form, University of Calgary Faculty of Nursing Name Badge, adherence to dress code, etc.
Initial inquiries should be directed to the Undergraduate Programs Manager c/o the Faculty of Nursing Undergraduate Programs Office (firstname.lastname@example.org or 403-220-4636).
If approved for consideration, the following documentation will also be required:
- Official Transcripts
- Nursing curriculum contact person from home institution (name, phone number and email address)
- Detailed course outlines may be required
- A Visiting Student or Exchange Student Application & Registration Form (if final approval is granted)
Final approval must be granted by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs, Faculty of Nursing in consultation with the Undergraduate Programs Manager and the Clinical Resources Coordinator.
