Imagine opening your home to a new cultural experience by sharing meals, stories and laughter with eager learners from around the world. Kim Campbell, a dedicated Homestay host with the University of Calgary's English Language Program, has been doing just that since 2022.

Campbell’s story began years ago in Burnaby, B.C., where she first dipped her toes into the world of hosting international students. "I wanted my children to meet and live with people from other cultures," she says. "I feel every Canadian family should try homestay at least once to give their children this experience."

With the Homestay program, students from all over the world come to UCalgary to learn English in a modern setting from highly qualified instructors who specialize in teaching English as an additional language. Programs range from two to 13 weeks and are perfect for students at all skill levels. Students that choose to participate in a Homestay with a Canadian family have a unique opportunity to improve their English in an informal setting, while learning about Canadian culture.

Experiencing cultural connections

Moving to Calgary in 2021, Campbell reignited her passion for hosting, this time welcoming university students into her home. Her first student in Calgary was from Colombia, and from the moment he arrived, Campbell knew she had made the right choice. "Having always had a house full of kids and teenagers, always cooking for a crowd, I knew I was living my best life,” she says. Hosting students has not only filled her home with warmth and laughter but has also enriched her life in countless ways.

Campbell’s homestay experience has become a family affair. Her five-year-old granddaughter plays the role of ambassador, welcoming each student with open arms and a willingness to learn their names. "She makes each of my students feel welcome," says Campbell. This familial warmth extends to regular Sunday dinners, where students join her family to connect and share in their traditions.

Sharing holiday traditions

Hosting students during holidays is an experience Campbell treasures deeply. From first Halloween costumes to festive Christmas celebrations, these occasions offer students a glimpse into her family’s perspective on Canadian culture and family life. "Having a house full is such a gift. I'm so grateful for the time spent with them, and they all keep in touch — by text, email, and even through mail and packages."

Participating in the Homestay program has not only fulfilled Campbell’s desire to share her life with others but has also enriched her health and appreciation for the little things. "I truly believe that having these wonderful young men and women in my life has improved my health, my appreciation for the little things, and has kept me so positive on this journey.”

Providing foundational experiences and lasting memories

For Campbell, the connections she has formed with her students are lasting. She fondly recalls sending them home with core memories of life in Calgary and an understanding of familial bonds that celebrate both differences and similarities.

Being a Homestay host offers an opportunity to build bridges between cultures, create lifelong friendships, and share in the joy of learning and discovery. As Campbell puts it, "This program has given me so much. Now I get to be a 'Canadian grandma' to so many amazing, funny, loving students from all over the world."

Become a Homestay host

If you're a community member interested in becoming a part of this rewarding experience, consider joining Campbell and others in opening your home to international students. UCalgary’s English Language Homestay program offers a unique chance to make a difference in a student's life while enriching your own.

As a Homestay host, you will be offering students the unique opportunity to experience Western Canadian culture firsthand. You will also benefit from learning about them, their countries and their cultures. Host families receive a modest per-student payment intended to offset living costs.
