Faculty of Law announces Class of 2025 award winners

Three awards were handed out at the annual grad banquet on April 20

Robin Young, JD'25

Campbell McLaurin Achievement Award 

This award, representing outstanding achievement by a graduating student, is presented annually to the graduating student who has not only achieved high academic standing but who has also made a significant contribution to the life of the Law School during the three years of the Juris Doctor degree.

The 2025 winner is Robin Young, JD'25

Robin Young has made a lasting impact on the UCalgary Law community through her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to student life. A dedicated member of the Society of Law Students (SLS), Robin previously served as 1L Events and 2L Representative and was Vice President Administration during her 3L, where she formalized and developed official policies for the SLS. She played a major role in the success of the 2024 Law Show, taking on leadership responsibilities that brought students together in celebration of their shared experiences. Robin participated in multiple moots, contributing as a researcher. She is also recognized for her support in several student initiatives, including OUTLaw and Pro Bono Students Canada as a group leader and volunteer. Known for her positivity, inclusivity and tireless work ethic, Robin leaves a legacy of community-building and advocacy that will benefit future law students for years to come.

"Robin has always been a friendly face in the class. She does her best to make sure everyone feels included and cares so much for the well-being of her friends and classmates. Many students are lucky to have a friend in Robin."

Samer Mohamed, JD'25

Dean Mike Wylie Social Responsibility Award

The Social Responsibility Award honours a graduating student who has made a significant contribution to the understanding or resolution of social or human rights issues while acquiring his/her legal education at the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, including:  

  • making the public aware of human rights abuses;
  • helping to resolve human rights problems;
  • furthering equality of disadvantaged minorities, and/or;
  • human rights advocacy.

The 2025 winner is Samer Mohamed, JD'25

"Throughout law school, Samer Mohamed has zealously advocated for advancing equality for disadvantaged minorities within the Faculty of Law and the broader community. Her unwavering dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) has had a profound and lasting impact."

Samer Mohamed has been a driving force for equity, diversity and inclusion at the Faculty of Law. As Vice President EDI of the SLS she led several initiatives, including the creation of an Incident Response Plan, the development of a formal complaint process, and the expansion of EDI resources for students. She assisted in organizing a wide range of events that fostered dialogue, education, and community-building within UCalgary Law. Known for her leadership, thoughtfulness, and passion for making a difference, Samer has played a critical role in advancing the Faculty’s commitment to an inclusive and supportive environment.

Grant McKibben Prize

This prize, in honour and memory of a highly popular member of our first graduating class, is presented to "a graduating student who epitomizes the energy and spirit of the Calgary Law School community."

The 2025 winner is Brandon Fleming, JD'25

Brandon Fleming has made a meaningful and lasting contribution to the UCalgary Law community through his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to supporting his peers. Known for his reliability and willingness to step up whenever needed, Brandon consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to creating a welcoming and collaborative environment. Whether offering academic support, volunteering for initiatives, or encouraging classmates to get involved, he embodied the spirit of community that defines the Faculty of Law. 

"In considering what defines that spirit, I think of kindness without expectation, unwavering support for others, and a genuine investment in making our community better, even in the face of challenge. Brandon embodies all of that, and more."
