A minute with our leaders

Learn more about the leaders in UCalgary's Faculty of Nursing in a 60 Second Interview, where interviewees have only a minute to craft answers to five questions designed to learn more about who they are and what makes them special.

Dr. Lorelli Nowell, Associate Dean, Graduate Programs

1. What drew you to nursing?

I was drawn to nursing largely because of my grandmother. She was a nurse who married a military policeman, and together they had the opportunity to travel the world and work in some amazing places. Listening to her stories showed me that nursing could be both meaningful and adventurous. I also saw nursing as a solid, practical career choice that offered good pay, strong job security, and the flexibility to work in many different settings and places. To me, nursing seemed like a profession that would offer me personal fulfillment, long-term stability, and basically endless options for where my career could go.

2. If you could implement one change to improve general public health, what would it be?

I'd focus on combating health misinformation. With so much conflicting information online, people are confused about everything from vaccines to basic nutrition, leading to poor health decisions and eroding trust in healthcare. Nurses are the healthcare providers people trust most, and we can make a real impact by correcting misconceptions when we hear them and pointing people toward reliable sources to help make better health decisions and improve public health outcomes.

3. From a Calgary prospective, do you prefer winter or summer?

Honestly, I enjoy both winter and summer in Calgary for different reasons, but if I had to pick a favorite season, it's actually fall. There's something special about those crisp fall days when the leaves are changing colors and the air is cool but not freezing yet. You don't have to deal with the slush and mess that comes later, and everything just feels fresh and vibrant. The best part is that fall in Calgary can be so short-lived. You never really know when that first snowfall is going to hit, so it makes you appreciate every nice day while it lasts. There's almost a sense of urgency to get outside and soak it all in before winter arrives, and I love that about it.

4. What uplifting song or piece of music will you add to the FoN Spotify playlist?

Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" because it wraps a melancholy story in a triumphant, celebratory package that makes you want to belt it out and feel alive.

5. What makes you happy?

What makes me happiest is getting out and experiencing new places. There's something about traveling somewhere I've never been before that just fills me with energy and excitement. Whether it's exploring a new city, hiking a trail I've never done, or just wandering around and stumbling onto something unexpected, I love that sense of discovery and adventure. Every trip feels like an opportunity to see things from a different perspective, meet new people, and collect memories that stick with me long after I get home.
