Collaborative Practice through Interprofessional Education (IPE) in Calgary

Healthcare professionals require strong teamwork skills to work interprofessionally; this is key to patient safety and quality care

What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?

IPE is defined as two or more professions learning with, from and about each other and is mandatory for all healthcare professional education programs to foster a culture of safety in health and education systems

Vision

Our collective goals are to engage learners so they are able to effectively collaborate to achieve safe, high-quality patient care outcomes during their programs and out into practice

Why

  • To ensure our graduates have the skills required there needs to be thoughtful, deliberate opportunities to practice collaborative practice through IPE activities
  • Educators need to be prepared to teach from an interprofessional perspective

Standards

National interprofessional collaborative competencies establish standards and IPE is mandated by accreditation and/or strategic plans.

Learning experiences are developed based on: Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative Interprofessional Care Competencies (2024).

History of IPE in Calgary

CICE

The Calgary Interprofessional Collaborative Education Committee (CICE) was formed in 2015 and consists of faculty members across various professions from the University of Calgary and SAIT. We currently collaborate with programs from University of Alberta including occupational therapy and physical therapy.

What we do

This committee implements interprofessional education (IPE) programs that bring health professions students together to learn how to provide patient care in a collaborative team environment.  We endorse ethical and patient safety competencies mandated by health professional bodies.

Vision of the Program

Our program aims to provide opportunities for our students, from multiple different professions, to develop confidence and capacity for collaborative practice.

This competency is achieved through development of the four key domains of interprofessional collaboration, which help achieve optimal relationship focused patient care. The four domains include:

Role Clarity

Team Communication

Collaboration

Team Functioning

Common Curriculum IPE

California State University, Long Beach (n.d.) Veltri, Webb, Matveev & Zapatero (2011)

As students are exposed to the core principles of collaborative practice, learning moves from knowledge through to practice-based skills and the affective domain. The ‘Exposure’ level of learning can be obtained individually through traditional learning activities. However, the ‘immersion’ and ‘integration’ stages require shared learning with learners from other professions.

Kolb’s Experiential Learning

Kolb’s Experiential Learning is a widely used learning framework which details the way individuals learn through experience. The model's foundation is the belief that learning is a process, and knowledge is obtained through experience. The learning cycle includes these four stages which learners move through:

Competency Framework

Our IPE program is based around the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative Care Competencies.

Signature Experiences

Our program is centered around four unique ‘signature’ experiences which expose students to the four IPE domains.

Experiences are interprofessional with learners from multiple professions collaborating in an authentic manner to achieve relationship focused care.

Students are encouraged to collaborate and reflect on the intersectionality of the various professions to achieve relationship focused care.

This event included 21 different professions working together in a patient centered case study using a standardized patient. The focus of the event was expanding role clarity across the various health professions.

Students from nursing and medicine worked in groups of eight to nine to collaborate on a virtual simulated patient case. The focus of the event was on collaboration and team functioning.

Students from 18 different health professions will view the film Greg's Wings related to his story. Afterwards, students will participate in a panel discussion to view the patient case through a collaborative practice lens.

Students across four professions will work together in person in groups of 8-9 along with a simulated patient. The focus is building skills in team functioning and communication.
