Background

  • Graduate nurses have one of the highest turnover rates within the profession of nursing; leaving their first job or the profession within the first 12 months of practice.
  • Turnover is costly to the healthcare system and affects the safety and quality of patient care.
  • Graduate nurses are essential for addressing the nursing shortage

Purpose of study

Better understand the transition experience

Explore and develop an understanding about the early transition experiences of graduate nurses working in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Develop transition programs

Exploration of this topic will help inform key stakeholders about graduate nurses’ current experiences and help in the development of transition programs that support the current needs of graduate nurses.

Study participants will:

Be a Bachelor prepared nurse

Hold a Bachelor or Nursing (BN) degree 

Working for less than 18 months

Participants must be recent graduates and working for less than 18 months

Employed within Calgary, Alberta

Full time, part time, or casual

Participation Requirements

  • Participate in 1 interview (maximum 90 minutes in length)
  • Identify formula or informal nurse who supported you during your initial months of practice
  • Share any resources you received that related to your transition experience
