Distinguished members of UCalgary community among latest appointees to Order of Canada

Four members of the University of Calgary community have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours including an Officer of the Order, renowned radiologist Dr. Lindsay Machan, MD, and three Members, among them Dr. Stephen Randall, a PhD professor emeritus of history who helped establish UCalgary’s formidable international focus.

They were among 83 new appointments announced by the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada on June 27, 2024.

Established in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made positive and lasting contributions to our nation.

Dr. Stephen Randall, PhD, a professor emeritus of history was a dean of UCalgary’s former Faculty of Social Sciences between 1994 and 2006. Renowned for his extensive, often risky work in Colombia during a particularly violent period in the 1980s and '90s, Randall served as director of UCalgary’s Latin American Research Centre, and he helped establish many impactful and lasting programs which encouraged internationalization. Randall also served as director of the Institute for U.S. Policy Research and he was awarded the National Order of Merit, Grand Cross from the Foreign Ministry of Colombia. He is an elected lifetime member of the Royal Society of Canada.

Nima Dorjee, BSc (Eng) ’92, is a leading engineer and Tibetan human rights activist. He built UCalgary’s Schulich School of Engineering internship program into the largest of its kind in Canada. Under his leadership as president of the Project Tibet Society he has played a pivotal role in the resettlement of more than 1,000 displaced Tibetans in Canada.

Dr. Brian Evans, Hon LLD’14, is Canada’s first chief food safety officer and the country’s longest serving veterinary officer. He was praised for his leadership during the 2003 bovine spongiform encephalopathy outbreak, and he played a key role in the establishment of Canada’s Council of Chief Veterinary Officers. A longtime proponent of One Health, he also contributed to the creation of Veterinarians Without Borders (Canada) and the Canadian Embryo Transfer Certification program. Evans received an honorary degree from the University of Calgary in 2014.

Dr. Lindsay Machan, MD, is an early Canadian proponent of interventional radiology whose company created and licensed the paclitaxel coated stent which has greatly improved the lives of patients with peripheral arterial disease. A clinical practitioner at the Vancouver Hospital and an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, Machan serves on the UCeed Advisory Board. UCeed is a philanthropically driven investment fund which brings UCalgary research into the community to enhance social, economic and environmental outcomes.
