Stress, Resilience and Medicine

Thursday, March 16, 2017

You know this already... there is no doubt that resilience is a trait we are focused on... intensely focused on.  It is the subject of two research projects initiated by your colleagues in med school and is the topic of numerous literature searches.  Is it immutable?  Does it change after an exam?  Is it inherent or can it be learned?  Is it present on a scale unique to each person but only without a certain range?

No one has the answers... in  a recent review, there were eleven resilience scales approved as being valid.  ELEVEN...  there is a saying in medicine that the "number of treatments available is inversely proportional to their efficacy"... maybe that applies here as well.

More and more we are looking to the experience of the military and how they build resilience in our troops.  Like physicians they are exposed to life and death situations.
