UCalgary Nursing announces four new additions to leadership team

A message from Dr. Catherine Laing, interim dean, Faculty of Nursing

We are very pleased to announce some exciting new additions to our leadership team, with the appointment of four new associate deans.  

Please join me in welcoming Tracie Risling - Associate Dean, Innovation, Michelle Scott – Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, Nicole Letourneau - Assistant Dean, Mentorship for Research and Grant Success, and Lorelli Nowell – Associate Dean, Graduate Programs.  

Each of these new appointees brings a wide breadth of knowledge and passion to their new roles.  Their leadership will undoubtedly strengthen the Faculty of Nursing's commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement and align with the University of Calgary’s strategic plan Ahead of Tomorrow. 

 

Dr. Tracie Risling

Dr. Tracie Risling – Associate Dean, Innovation 

Risling, RN, PhD, currently an associate professor in the Faculty of Nursing, brings her expertise in patient-orientated health informatics research to her new role as Associate Dean, Innovation. With a strong background in nursing education and leadership within the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association, Tracie will drive innovation and entrepreneurial thinking across nursing education, research and practice. 

 

 

Dr. Nicole Letourneau

Dr. Nicole Letourneau – Assistant Dean, Mentorship for Research and Grant Success 

Letourneau, PhD, RN, FCAHS, FAAN, FCAN, FRSC, is a professor in the Faculty of Nursing and Cumming School of Medicine (Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Community Health Sciences) at the University of Calgary. Known for her significant contributions to child health and development research, she has assumed a new leadership role as assistant dean, Mentorship for Research and Grant Success. In this capacity, her focus is on cultivating mentorship opportunities for new and early-career faculty members, graduate students, and post-doctoral trainees to enhance research excellence and funding within the Faculty of Nursing.  

 

Dr. Lorelli Nowell

Dr. Lorelli Nowell – Associate Dean, Graduate Program 

Nowell, PhD, MN assumed the role of Associate Dean, Graduate Programs role July 1, 2024. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Kathryn King-Shier for her assistance during this time period.  

Dr. Nowell is passionate about teaching and learning and she has a strong mixed methods research background with numerous interdisciplinary collaborations. Her emerging program of research focuses on studying innovations in teaching and learning, the professional learning and development of educators, and mentorship to support teaching and learning practices.

  

Dr. Michelle Scott

Dr. Michelle Scott – Associate Dean, Indigenous Education 

Scott, EdD, MEd, PhD, previously served as director, Indigenous Initiatives, in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary and will expand her role to associate dean, Indigenous Education. The purpose of this role is to lead the advancement of decolonizing and indigenizing priorities for the Faculty of Nursing and the University of Calgary.
