BScN Course Registration
In Year 1 of the BScN program, students are responsible for building their own schedule and registering in their courses.
In Years 2 and up of the program, students are automatically registered into their required courses by the faculty.
Year 1 At a Glance
Year 1 is a foundational year that builds the key knowledge and skills needed to be successful in nursing. The BScN is a full-time, professional program, and students must successfully complete 11 courses (33 units) as outlined by the end of the Summer term in order to progress to Year 2.
| Fall Term | NRSG 203 – Anatomy & Physiology I |
| Winter Term | NRSG 204 – Anatomy & Physiology II ACWR 303 – Academic Writing |
| Fall or Winter Term | NRSG 201 – Introduction to Nursing NRSG 202 – Indigenous Health Studies |
| Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer Term | Junior Statistics Requirement (STAT 205 recommended) Philosophy requirement (any PHIL) course Junior Arts Option Junior Science Option 2 Junior Open Options |
Remember to register for both Fall and Winter classes at the same time! We recommending registering in your core courses first and then adding your options around them.
Your option courses can be anything that you want to take, provided that the arts option is offered by the Faculty of Arts and the science option is offered by the Faculty of Science. This is your only opportunity to take option courses during the BScN program, so we encourage students to take courses that are of interest to you. Check out the "First-Year Options" list for some suggestions!
NOTE: This list is not comprehensive of all option courses available, and courses not on this list may still be used to meet option requirements.
It is recommended that students plan to take Arts or Open Options in the Spring/Summer terms, as there is limited course offerings available in those terms. However, students may take the listed courses in any sequence (however, NRSG 202, NRSG 203/204, and ACWR 303 are not offered in all terms).
Students who have completed prior post-secondary education, dual-credit, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses may have transfer credit that can be used to their Year 1 course load. You can check your Transfer Credit Report in your Student Centre to see what credit you have received.

Registration Tools
There are tools available in your Student Centre to help you plan your schedule, register in classes, and monitor your degree progression
Visual Schedule Builder (VSB) is a tool that is available to you in your Student Centre which will allow you to search for classes and build potential schedules. You can view courses by term and save your schedules for later.
NOTE: VSB is an excellent tool for building your schedule and initially registering in classes. However, for any changes to your schedule after your initial registration, it is recommended to use the course search. Using the VSB for changes to an existing schedule can lead to accidently dropping courses or other errors.
You can use the "validate" option to review your shopping cart before your enrolment start time to check for potential error. These errors include time conflicts, unfulfilled prerequisites or corequisites, missing departmental consent, antirequisites, and so on. Validation can be done in both VSB and your Student Centre.
NOTE: The validate option doesn't result in enrolment. Once your enrolment start time arrives, you’ll still need to process your enrolment even if you’ve successfully validated your courses.
Once you have registered in courses, you can use the Academic Requirements (AR) tool to check to see if your courses meet your degree requirements. allows you to view the completed and pending course requirements for your degree. You can also plan future course selections and explore adding, removing, or entirely changing your degree program components.
Troubleshooting
If you are running into any challenges or error messages when trying to register for courses, there are many resources available to assist you.
Enrolment Services maintains a website with troubleshooting for common issues, as well as publishing any known system issues that may be preventing students from enrolling in certain courses.
If you are encountering an error message that says that you do not meet the "pre-, co-, or antirequisite or reserve requirement" for a specific course, check the reserve requirements for the section you are trying to register in! We often see students receive this error message and jump to thinking that the issue is with a prerequisite course, however it is frequently that the section of the course they are trying to register in is restricted to students in certain programs.
NOTE: For nursing students specifically, we often see this error arise with students at main campus trying to enroll in courses that are reserved for our Rural/Indigenous Community Route students. If an NRSG course has 3 sections, usually Lecture 03 is reserved for those off-site programs, but you can regisetr in the other sections as long as they have seats available!
Once you have registered for your courses initially, it is strongly recommended that you make any changes to your schedule using the course search tool in your Student Centre. Using the Visual Schedule Builder to make changes can lead to accidently dropping courses and other errors.
