IPE for Facilitators
Why IPE?
- The goal of IPE is to create a safe space where students can practice working together as part of a collaborative health team with the goal of taking these skills into their future practice.
- IPE was associated with positive changes in students’ attitudes, knowledge, and collaboration skills (Prabawati, 2018). Additionally, IPE gave students the confidence to practice more independently as their skills in communication and role clarity increased.
- Studies show students’ reactions to IPE to be largely positive as they saw value in the experience.
What is expected of a facilitator?
- You will act as the facilitator for a small interprofessional student team.
- Prior to the event you will receive a guide and location information, and your guide will include a timeline of the event as well as debriefing questions.
- Your main goals are to keep the students on track and guide them in their debriefing questions as students reflect on collaborative practice.
- It’s important to note that the facilitator role has a big impact on student experience. Studies show that one of the main factors that promoted IPE is a relaxed and inviting learning environment where facilitators focused on respect and inclusion of different perspectives and experience.
