Introduction to an Academic Nursing Role

Time: 1 - 2 Hours | Format: Online | Pace: Learner Led

The academic environment is characterized as having its own distinct culture, language, values, behaviors, and expectations. Research indicates that new faculty are generally unfamiliar with academia and unaware of the complex work and performance expectations associated with teaching, scholarship, research, and service (Fritz, 2018).

Transitioning into academia requires socialization and enculturation into a new faculty role. This micro-credential is designed to give you the opportunity to reflect on who you are and what is important to you and consider how this foundation influences your transition into your teaching role. Each participant has the opportunity to reflect on and articulate their values and what teaching nursing means to them.

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this micro-credential, participants will have the opportunity to:

Reflect

Reflect on why you became a nurse educator, how you understand your role in academia, and the expectations that you have relative to your role

Respond

Respond to the question, what does it mean to be a good nurse?

Identify

From your understanding of what it means to be a good nurse, identify three core values that represent you as a person and as a professional

Completion Criteria

1. Submit a video/audio or two-paragraph written reflection on ‘why’ you pursued an academic role, ‘how’ you understand your role in academia, and your ‘expectations’ associated with your role.

2. Submit a visual outlining your core values and in one or two sentences, express why these are important to you.
