Navigating within an academic nursing role requires an awareness and understanding of the role and essential responsibilities. Transitioning into the advanced practice role of nurse educator involves entering a new community of practice with associated performance expectations.

This micro-credential is designed to introduce you to the expectations associated with working as a faculty member in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary. Each participant has the opportunity to express an understanding of academic performance requirements and how these relate to their identified development goals in their professional development plan.

Upon completion of this micro-credential, participants will have the opportunity to:

Review

Review the Nurse Educator Core Competencies outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) 

Review

Review the Faculty of Nursing (FofN) Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure of Academic Staff

Compare and contrast

Compare and contrast the WHO nurse educator competencies and the performance guidelines outlined within the FofN Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure of Academic Staff 

Articulate

Articulate the three areas of performance related to your role in academia 

Describe

Describe the Academic Performance Report (APR) and how to access information regarding an APR

Articulate

Based upon the performance guidelines outlined in the FofN Guidelines for Procedure Pertaining to Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure of Academic Staff, articulate in chart form the knowledge and strengths you bring to your role, your development needs and goals, and how you plan to meet your development goals 

Completion Criteria

1. Submit a professional development plan indicating the area of academic performance as it relates to your expressed development goals.
